In a 5-part bulletin series released weekly, Fr Bob shares his thoughts and reflections on the essential role of local parishes in the future of our Church - in light of the We Are His Witnesses process here in the Archdiocese of Newark. First, a look at statistics and realities, followed by practical advice and pastoral insights on a strong path forward. The series continues with a frank look at what keeps people away and ends with sharing concerns of the priests who serve. Take a moment and read it ... and feel free to share your thoughts and reactions.

UPDATES

Chestnut Street Parking Lot
We have received the City of Summit’s announcement regarding the February 28, 2026, closing of the Chestnut Street Parking Lot. For many years, we have been blessed by the use of that lot for parish events in both Memorial Hall and the church. Its closure will certainly be an inconvenience for some, and we want to acknowledge that openly.
At the same time, we remain grateful for the many ways our community continues to adapt, support one another, and make our gatherings possible. As we move forward, we welcome creative ideas and encourage parishioners to share helpful parking guidance so that we can continue working together to ensure everyone who comes to St Teresa of Avila feels welcomed and cared for.
Fair Share Housing
We acknowledge the discussion at the recent Summit City Council meeting regarding Fair Share Housing and its mention of St Teresa of Avila. As a reminder, in our letter to the City of Summit dated July 22, 2025, we outlined that if any movement were to occur on this topic, the following process would need to take place:
-
A firm proposal is presented to the Pastor of St Teresa of Avila.
-
The Pastor reviews the proposal with the parish staff.
-
With their approval, the proposal is brought to the Pastoral Council for discussion and input.
-
With their endorsement, the proposal is then presented to the Finance Council for their discussion and input.
-
With their endorsement, parish listening sessions would be scheduled.
-
If the parish response is favorable, the proposal is shared with the Regional Bishop for his input and consent.
-
With his consent, the proposal is forwarded to Archdiocesan officials for their consideration and guidance.
As we noted in our December 19, 2025 email and follow up letter on January 29, 2026 letter to The City of Summit, all discussions regarding parish and Church properties are on hold until the We Are His Witnesses process prepares the master plan for the Archdiocese of Newark.
We understand the importance of fair housing in our community. Since St Teresa of Avila has been asked to participate in this conversation, the above process will guide our response. This ensures that any consideration of such a plan is approached with thoughtful, transparent, and collaborative discernment at every level of parish life.
